Xbox Series X restock and the digital edition question

Xbox Series X restock, minus the panic. Three Xbox models, which one is usually in stock, when the disc drive matters, and how to be told when it's back.

XBOX Series X 1TB Console with XBOX Wireless Controller - 4K Gaming - 120FPS

The Xbox Series X has the quietest restock story of the big consoles. It's usually in stock, and when it isn't, it's usually one model of three. That's the whole trick to buying one: know which three, decide which you want before you need it, and set an alert on the one that matters so you hear when it's back.

The three Xboxes we track

Model Disc drive Storage Launch list price
Xbox Series X 1TB Yes 1 TB $499.99 (10 Nov 2020)
Xbox Series X 1TB All-Digital No 1 TB $449.99 (15 Oct 2024)
Xbox Series S 512GB No 512 GB $299.99 (10 Nov 2020)

Those are the prices each one launched at, on the day it launched. Microsoft has raised its console prices more than once since, so the number on the shelf today is different; each product page shows the price Best Buy reported and when we last looked.

The Series X and the All-Digital Series X are the same console inside. The Series S is a smaller, less powerful box that plays the same library at lower resolution, and it is the one that's almost never out of stock.

The digital edition question

Do you need the disc drive? Here's the honest decision:

  • Get the disc model if you buy used games, lend and borrow, want to resell when you're done, or have slow internet. Physical games are often cheaper in sales, and a disc skips a 100 GB download. It also plays Blu-rays.
  • Get the All-Digital if everything you play is on Game Pass or bought from the store anyway, and you'd rather save the money and the shelf space.
  • Get the Series S if you play at 1440p or on a smaller TV and you want the cheapest way into the same library.

One thing the PlayStation side has that Xbox doesn't: the PS5 Slim's disc drive is a separate module you can add later. On Xbox the choice is final. If you're torn, the disc Series X is the safe pick.

Which one is actually in stock

Most of the time, all three. When one goes sold out it's more often the disc Series X, the one most people want. Sold-out stretches cluster around the same things that empty every console shelf: price changes, big game launches, sales weekends and the holidays.

That is a tendency, not a schedule. Each product page here logs every restock and sellout we see, with the time, and shows a pattern once a model has restocked at least eight times. For all three Xboxes we have not seen enough restocks to say when they usually come back, and the page says "not enough data" rather than guessing.

Where to look when it's gone

  • The other model. If the disc Series X is sold out online, the All-Digital often isn't. Decide in advance whether you'd take it.
  • A store near you. Consoles reach stores on their own trucks, separately from the website. The near-me page shows which Best Buy stores around you say they have one, with a pickup link. Our guide to store pickup restocks explains how to use it.
  • A price-drop alert. All three get discounted a few times a year. Tick "also on price drops" on the product page and the sale comes to you.

A routine that works

  1. Pick your model using the questions above. Don't let a restock decide it for you.
  2. Set an alert on that product page. One email the moment it's back online, with the price and the link, and nothing else. If you'd take either Series X, set an alert on both.
  3. Sign in to Best Buy ahead of time with your address and payment saved.
  4. If the email says a store nearby has it, order pickup from the link rather than driving over.
