Meta sells two headsets that run exactly the same library, and the cheaper one is the one most people should buy. The exceptions are worth knowing about, because the Quest 3's screen is a real step up and it's the one that disappears around the holidays.
What they share
Both headsets use the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip and 8 GB of memory, so games run the same on each. Both have full-colour passthrough for mixed reality, both use the Touch Plus controllers, and both play every Quest title, including the big exclusives. Battery life and comfort are similar; the Quest 3 is a little slimmer at the front.
Where they differ
| Quest 3S | Quest 3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 1832 × 1920 per eye, LCD | 2064 × 2208 per eye, LCD |
| Lenses | Fresnel (like Quest 2) | Pancake (thinner, sharper edge to edge) |
| Depth sensor | No | Yes |
| Storage | 128 GB or 256 GB | 512 GB |
| Field of view | Narrower | Wider |
The lenses are the real difference. Pancake optics give the Quest 3 a sharper image right to the edges and a slimmer headset. The 3S looks like a Quest 2 with a much faster chip, which is still a very good thing.
Who should pick which
Get the Quest 3S if you're new to VR, buying for a kid, or mostly playing Beat Saber, Gorilla Tag and party games. You get the same games and the same speed for a lot less, and 128 GB holds plenty.
Get the Quest 3 if you read text in VR (desktop apps, browsing), you care about image clarity, or you plan to use mixed reality a lot. The depth sensor makes room mapping noticeably better, and the 512 GB covers a big library.
Finding them in stock
The 3S is usually easy to find. The Quest 3, especially the 512 GB model, goes in and out of stock around sales and the holidays. Our pages for the Quest 3 512GB and the Quest 3S 128GB show the live price and stock at the stores we check, plus every price drop we've recorded. Both headsets get discounted a few times a year, so if you're not in a hurry, an alert with "also on price drops" ticked is the patient way to buy.
