The RTX 5090 is the card everyone wants and almost nobody gets at the price NVIDIA printed. It is the fastest gaming card made, it is also the card AI builders buy by the pair, and the two groups are fighting over the same small pile. This guide is about getting one without paying a reseller, which is possible, slowly, if you set it up right.
What list price means for a 5090
NVIDIA launched the RTX 5090 on 30 January 2025 at a list price of $1,999. That number applies to the Founders Edition, NVIDIA's own card, which we don't currently track at Best Buy. Every 5090 you will see at a store is a partner card from ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and others, and partner cards come with their own prices. The plainer models sit nearest the list price; the flagship coolers with the big RGB sit far above it.
So "list price" for a 5090 in practice means two things: the $1,999 the Founders Edition was launched at, and the price of the cheapest partner card in stock on any given day, which is the number our product pages show you, with the time we saw it.
Why it stays above the box price
- Two buyers for one card. Gamers want it for 4K. People building AI workstations want its 32 GB of memory, and they'll pay more and buy several. That demand doesn't fade the way console demand does.
- The cheap models are made in small numbers. Partners earn more on the premium versions, so the shelf fills with those first.
- Every restock is contested. Bots buy within seconds of a listing flipping, and a 5090 is the most profitable flip in the catalog.
- It's a big, hungry card. 575 W of board power and triple-slot coolers mean fewer people can just drop it in, which keeps the resale pool smaller too.
It settles over time. Every generation has. But the 5090 settles last.
The models we track
| Card | Where it sits |
|---|---|
| ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 5090 | Mid-range cooler, usually the nearest to list |
| Gigabyte RTX 5090 Gaming OC | Mild overclock, mid-range |
| MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC | Triple-fan partner card, mid-range |
| ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 | The flagship, priced like one |
The order matters. If you want to pay the least, watch the TUF and the Gigabyte first. The Astral is a beautiful card and it will be the last one to come near list.
What our restock log shows
Each product page records every restock and sellout we've seen, with the time. The 5090 is new to our catalog and restocks rarely, so for every model above we have not seen enough restocks to say when they happen. The page says "not enough data" rather than guessing, and will show a pattern once a card has restocked at least eight times. Until then, treat anything you read about "5090 restock days" the way we do: as a rumor.
What we can say is the general shape, which holds for cards across the board and which we cover in when Best Buy restocks graphics cards: weekday mornings more than evenings, several models in the same hour more than one alone, and holiday weeks that follow no pattern at all.
The routine
- Set alerts on all four. The cheapest 5090 in stock changes from one restock to the next. An alert on each means you hear about whichever lands first, and a single email per restock means your inbox stays quiet between them.
- Decide your ceiling before the email arrives. Write down the most you'll pay. A restock at 9 a.m. is not the moment to negotiate with yourself.
- Sign in to Best Buy now. Payment and address saved. A 5090 near list lasts a minute or two, and the people who lose it lose it at checkout.
- Open, add, pay. Don't browse for a power supply. The card is the race; the rest can wait.
- Check the stores. The near-me page shows which Best Buy stores around you say they have a card on the shelf. A pickup order holds it, and bots don't run against a suburban store.
- Ignore the marketplace listings. A reseller price is a snapshot of today's panic. Partner 5090s do come back.
Is it the right card?
If you're mainly gaming, pause before you commit two thousand dollars. The RTX 5080 is roughly the same experience at 1440p and comes back far more often. Our RTX 5090 vs RTX 5080 comparison walks through what the gap actually buys, and how to buy a graphics card at list price covers the whole lineup.
If it's the 5090 or nothing, the pages below are where to watch. Live status, the price Best Buy showed, when we last checked, and every restock we've caught.
